Nicci is one of Englands new and upcoming talents in Heelwork To Music and Freestyle and we are very excited that she has accepted our invitation to do a seminar for us.
We will let her introduce herself:
I began competing in HTM in 2005 after seeing a competition as part of a larger dog event. I watched all day and then entered a fun class the following day with a friend’s dog, and from then on, I was hooked. I currently have two red and white border collies. Leo, aged 7, works advanced level Heelwork to Music and, in 2012, made my dreams come true by qualifying for the Crufts fi-nals. Nala is just 2 years old and already works advanced in both Heelwork to Music and Freestyle. She qualified for the Crufts semi finals in both divisions, and has now qualified for Crufts 2014 in Freestyle, finishing in an impressive 3rd place in the semi finals. In addition to competing, I am also qualified to judge all levels of HTM and freestyle, having passed my judging exam in June 2009. I have also taken part in several practical judging seminars. Outside of HTM, we compete in agility with Leo in Grade 6 and Nala in grade 3. Leo also enjoys flyball , and has done obedience and scent work.
I studied for a Foundation Degree in Canine Behaviour and Training, graduating in November 2011. This has given me an in depth understanding of the way that dogs learn. All of my training is done using positive, reward based methods to ensure that the dogs are confident and happy, and love their training time. I love teaching, and have experience teaching a wide variety of handlers and dogs, and I pride myself in my ability to ‘think outside the box’ and find a method to suit each and every dog and handler. In my opinion, the best routines are those which are tailored to suit the individual dog, and use unique moves or sequences to showcase the dog’s ability, whilst flowing seamlessly to the music and taking the audience on a journey. I thrive on the challenge of teaching new moves and developing existing ones to create a truly unique and captivating performance.
